Brody sniffs out new secret fishing spot

On Saturday, the optimal tide for fishing was late in the afternoon. In August, late afternoon means unbearably hot conditions.

However, around 3 p.m., the weather was unexpectedly pleasant. There was a cool, northerly breeze, low humidity (for August) and the temperature was around 85 degrees. Brody and I decided to go fishing.

We pulled away from the dock at 3:30. The tide was falling, and the water was tannin stained but reasonably clear. Given the water conditions, I selected a white colored Finesse TRD (named Opening Night). It was the most visible color in the tannin-stained water.

Rather than throttle up the skiff, Brody and I enjoyed a slow and leisurely ride to the Wando River. Along the way, I noticed a small pocket in the marsh that was teeming with finger mullet. Brody signaled we should fish here by jumping onto the bow of the boat and sitting next to the trolling motor.

This was a place we had never fished before. But it was clear that as the tide fell, the finger mullet would be forced to leave the shallow pocket and move to an oyster bar in deeper water. I cast the Finesse TRD to the base of the oyster bar and caught a small trout.

For the next 15 minutes, the trout bite was hot.

When the falling tide forced the finger mullet to leave the shallow pocket, a school of redfish was waiting.

For the next 30 minutes, Brody and I enjoyed steady action from trout and redfish.

When the falling tide drained the small pocket, the bite shut off like a switch.

I reached down and scratched Brody’s head. He had found a new but very tide specific fishing spot. I wondered how many times I had passed this location. Completely unaware of the feeding situation that occurs halfway through the falling tide.

On the ride back to the dock, I reflected upon what had just happened. It made me laugh. In fishing and in life there is always something new to learn.
