Cast your way into the New Year

Many years ago, Elliott and I began fishing with Trey Epic on the last day of the year.

What started out as a simple fishing trip grew into a holiday tradition. A tradition that I always look forward to.

What better way to end the year? Fishing with your family and friends. This is also my plan for the other 364 days of the year.

Thinking about long standing traditions, Elliott and I fish together every New Year’s Day. We have been doing this since Elliott was in elementary school.

However, we did miss one year when he was working in Japan. That year, my daughter Maddie stood in for Elliott, and we Facetimed him while fishing. So, I believe the tradition is unbroken.

As I wind down 2024 and look forward to 2025, it occurs to me that I have a number of fishing traditions that have been established over the years.

Fishing with the winner of the Danziger Cup (formerly known as the Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament) is one of my favorites.

Another is participating in the Daniel Island Fishing Club Member Tournament. This is an event that I don’t really fish in. I participate to be a part of all the smack and trash talking between club members. It is really funny stuff.

Fishing has been good to me. It has provided me with a connection to my friends, my family and my community.

Fishing can also be good to you. In the coming year, I encourage you to gather your family and friends and go fishing. It will be fun. You will spend quality time together. You will create lasting memories. Perhaps, you will establish traditions of your own.
