For some, fishing is a recreation. For others, it is a sport. For me, it is both. More importantly, fishing is a thread that ties my family together. So, when my niece (Jessica) told me that her son (Jake) wanted to go fishing, I jumped at the opportunity. We agreed to go fishing on Sunday afternoon.
Jake is 3 years old. About the same age that my son Elliott really got into fishing. I used my experience with Elliott to plan the fishing trip with Jake.
Keep the trip short and the action hot. When fishing with young children, quantity over quality is the rule of the day.
Jake, Jessica, and her husband Sean arrived about noon. Our plan was to target trout on the incoming tide. This time of year, trout are abundant and hungry. Most are on the small side but there are a lot of them. The ideal species for my quantity or quality plan.
Jake helped me drive the boat to our first fishing location, a shallow oyster bar that dropped off into deeper water. A few days before, there was a large school of trout adjacent to the oyster bar.
Using the trolling motor, I positioned the skiff within a short cast of the bar. I cast my Z-Man Finesse TRD lure adjacent to the bar and hooked up immediately.
Jake was standing beside me, and I handed him the rod. He fought the trout like a pro.
While I helped Jake land his fish, Sean hooked up as well. Doubles!
For the next hour or so, we caught and released trout on nearly every cast. Jake insisted that we must have caught and released over 100 fish. However, I think the count was closer to 50.
Regardless of the actual number, the best catch of the day was time – time spent together.
