Fishing trip benefits the Field of Honor

Last year, at about this time, I stopped at the Field of Honor on my way to the Daniel Island waterfront. It was early in the morning and very quiet. The only sound was the rustling of the flags in the morning breeze.

For a moment, I stood and listened. In that sound, I heard the whisper of heroes. It moved me.

A few months ago, I told my good friend Ron Silverman about my experience. He shared that the Field of Honor is coordinated by the Daniel Island Exchange Club and raises funds to benefit youth, honor veterans and active-duty military, and the prevention of child abuse.

I asked Ron how I could support such a worthwhile endeavor. He helped me donate a fishing trip for the Exchange Club to auction at its annual fundraiser. Mollie and Michael Vardell won the trip.

On Thursday, Mollie, Michael, and I went fishing. The weather was perfect. It was sunny and warm, with low humidity.

Our plan was to target redfish and trout with lures. We launched the skiff at low tide and ran into a small, oyster laden creek. I positioned the skiff within casting distance of the channels at the base of the oyster bars.

Mollie and Michael cast Z-Man Finesse TRD lures into the channels and retrieved them with a hop-and-stop retrieve cadence. The bite was slow, but Mollie was able to complete an inshore slam by catching trout, flounder, and redfish. Michael caught a couple of fish as well.

I made the best catch of all by making two new friends.

In a couple of weeks, the Field of Honor will return to the greenway near the waterfront. Take a moment to visit, reflect, and listen to the whisper of heroes.
