Iron Horses streak to 7-straight track and field titles

It’s becoming a rite of spring.

The Philip Simmons High School girls’ and boys’ track teams both won Region 6-AA championships with dominating performances on April 29.

It marked the seventh consecutive year the Iron Horses were crowned region champs. Not bad, considering the school is only in its ninth year of existence.

The girls’ team posted a 286-135 decision over host school Woodland High School, with Academic Magnet holding down third place with 108.

It was more of the same as the Iron Horse boys cruised to a 309-110 decision over Timberland High School, with Academic Magnet third with 105 points.

The Iron Horse girls won 10 gold medals in the 17 events.

Ashley Roush led the way with victories in the long jump and pole vault with national elite efforts of 5.43 meters and 3.81 meters, respectively. She was third in the high jump.

Ashlynn Johnson won gold in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with respective times of 12.19 seconds and 25.43.

Laura Perry dominated the distance runs with gold medals in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Her times were 5 minutes and 16.69 seconds and 11:44.40.

Julia Reilly won the triple jump with a leap of 10.94 meters, while Chloe Woods finished first in the javelin with a throw of 33.55 meters. Jordyn Washington-Spencer won gold in the shot put with a heave of 10.12 meters.

The 4x100-meter relay team had the other gold medal, winning in 49.25.

The Iron Horse boys finished in first place in seven of the 17 events.

Jeremiah Richardson won the 200 dash in 22.25, and Montrell Mungin won the 400-meter hurdles in 57.51. The Iron Horses also won gold in the 4x100 and 4x800-meter relays.

The Iron Horses were golden in three field events. Jack Robinson won the javelin at 50.44 meters, Aaron Feaster won the discus with a heave of 39.96 meters, and high jumper Omonte Taylor cleared 1.75 meters to win his event.
