July brings new redfish rules, Fourth of July reflections

Many notable events occur in the first week of July.

On July 1, South Carolina redfish regulations will change. The creel limit (number of fish you can keep) is reduced to one redfish per person per day with a two-fish daily boat limit. The slot limit becomes 18 to 25 inches. Circle hooks are mandatory if you are fishing with natural baits.

To keep better track of all the fishing regulations, I use the Fish Rules app on my iPhone. It provides current rules and regulations for fresh and saltwater species.

In July, Brody (the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog) only goes fishing at dawn or dusk. The midday heat makes fishing in a fur coat uncomfortable and unsafe. In hot weather situations, I believe the fish bite better at dawn and dusk. At least that seems to be when I catch the most fish. Of course, that is when Brody goes fishing with me. He insists there is a correlation.

The 250th birthday of our great country occurs on the Fourth. For me, the Fourth is always special. My parents were immigrants who experienced the American dream. They were always in wonder at the potential and possibilities that America provided. My dad served in the U.S. Navy for over 30 years. He had many long deployments abroad. Before leaving for each deployment, he would remind me that time away from our family was a small sacrifice; there are countless others that have sacrificed so much more.

As I walk through the Field of Honor on the Daniel Island waterfront, I am thankful for all those who served and sacrificed for our freedom. When the flags rustle in the wind, I hear the whispers of heroes. It makes me grateful and proud to be an American.
