Players of the year named in local high school girls’ sports

The South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports honored four Bishop England and two Philip Simmons student-athletes as players of the year in their sport.
 
Sophomore Nora Brahim was named cross-country runner of the year in Class AA, while Bo Rosato was named the Class AA lacrosse player of the year. Olivia DeMarco was honored in volleyball, while Ellie Chalupsky earned swimmer of the year.
 
Philip Simmons honorees include Avah Mallek in cross country and Ansley Cohen in tennis. 
 
Brahim is one of the top distance runners in the Palmetto State despite being just a sophomore.
 
She won the state title with a time of 18 minutes and 22.25 seconds, which was 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, to help the Bishops earn their fifth state title.
 
Rosato had a big role in the Bishops’ 19-0 lacrosse season, which concluded with the No. 1 ranking in the state and No. 22 in the nation, according to MaxPreps.com
 
She scored 57 goals and tallied 39 ground balls. Rosato finished her career with 174 goals and 71 ground balls.
 
DeMarco helped the Bishops’ volleyball team post a 33-9-4 record and claim a berth in the Lower State championship with an impressive senior season. She was a team captain and played in 118 sets, recording 240 kills and a hitting percentage of .212. She collected 38 blocks, 145 digs and two serving aces.
 
Chalupsky, who just completed her sophomore year, led the Bishops’ swim team to their second straight state title with four gold medals.
 
She won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.04 seconds, and claimed gold in the 100-meter backstroke clocking in at 58.26.
 
Chalupsky was a member of the gold-medal winning 200- and 400-yard relays as well.
 
The Iron Horses’ Mallek was the Class AAA cross-country runner of the year. Only a sophomore, Mallek helped Philip Simmons repeat as state champions by claiming a gold medal at the state championship with a time of 18:51.96 over a 5K course.
 
Cohen helped the Iron Horses capture the Class AAA state championship over Daniel High School as the No. 1 singles tennis player. The senior earned all-state honors for the second consecutive year.
 
All-state soccer
Bishop England and Philip Simmons both had strong soccer seasons in 2024, and it was reflected by the all-state teams selections picked by the state coaches association.
 
The Bishops had eight players make either the boys’ or girls’ teams, while the Iron Horses had two players honored.
 
The BE boys who made the Class AA all-state team includes Easton Khouri, Lucas Loor, Zach Mullen and Andrew Rosebrock.
 
Elizabeth Brady, Emma Darnell, Kristjana Deveau and Lily Hodge were named to the girls’ all-state team.
 
Frank Jannuzzi and Ty’Sun Mack-Davis of Philip Simmons made the boys’ Class AAA all-state team.
 
All-state baseball
Bishop England standout Jackson Winer was named to the Class AA all-state team by the South Carolina Baseball Coaches’ Association.
 
Winer, who is a college pitching prospect, didn’t pitch in any games during the 2024 season. But he was a force on offense, leading the Bishops in nine categories, including a .420 batting average, 1.299 OPS, a .750 slugging percentage, a .540 on-base percentage, 33 hits, 28 RBI, 29 runs, 11 doubles, and five home runs.
