Iron Horses boys, BE girls and boys finish runners-up

It doesn’t get much better than this.
The Philip Simmons High School girls’ cross-country team won the Region 6-AA championship and claimed the title on Oct. 30 with an overwhelming performance by claiming five of the top seven places to defeat Academic Magnet 18-41 on the Iron Horses’ home course.
Laura Perry led the way with a gold-medal time of 18:58.28 over the 5-kilometer course. Lilah May claimed the silver medal and Flynn Taylor the bronze. Anna Alomar was fifth and Keziah Varner held down seventh place.
In the boys’ race, Academic Magnet edged the Iron Horses 28-29 to win the championship. Joseph Wright led the Iron Horses with a silver-medal effort of 16:08.08. Grady Castiglia was fourth, Pierce Walker sixth, Brian Stambaugh eighth, and Wesley Patterson held down ninth place.
The Class AA state meet is set for Nov. 22 in Newberry.
Meanwhile, the Bishop England teams fared well in the Region 6-AAAA championships, which were contested Nov. 2 in Hardeeville.
Like the PSHS boys, the Bishop boys came up one point short as May River posted a 49-50 victory.
Marc Brahim led BE with a bronze medal with a time of 16:08.36. Jackson Muller was fourth, Gabe Hislop ninth, Andrew Curl 15th and Ben Huntington was 19th.
Bluffton topped the Bishop girls 26-33 to win the title.
Nora Brahim finished first overall with a time of 18:37.47 while Grace Buss earned a bronze medal. Kate Thomas finished eighth, Siena D’Agostino 10th and Caroline Wilson held down the 11th place.
The Bishops will compete in the Class AAAA Lower State Championship Nov. 9 with the state meet set for Nov. 22 in Newberry.
The South Carolina High School League’s fall playoffs are underway, and both Philip Simmons and Bishop England are well represented.
In the Class AAAA boys’ volleyball playoffs, both the Iron Horses and Bishops reached the third round action, which was scheduled for Nov. 6.
The Iron Horse boys, the No. 3 seed in the Lower State, defeated Wilson in the first round and then topped Bluffton in the second round.
The Iron Horses were scheduled to play Oceanside Collegiate in the lower-bracket semifinal on Nov. 6.
Bishop England, the No. 5 seed in the Lower State, opened with a win over Hilton Head and May River to advance to the upper-bracket championship against Travelers Rest. The state championship is slated for Nov. 9.
In girls’ volleyball, Philip Simmons opened with a win over Manning in the Class AA playoffs. The Iron Horses were scheduled to play Lake City at home on Nov. 5.
Bishop England, which won the Class AA state title last fall, topped Beaufort in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs. The Bishops were slated to battle Hilton Head at home on Nov. 5.
In girls’ tennis, Philip Simmons, the Class AAA state champ last fall, had a bye in the first round. The Iron Horses were set to play Green-Sea-Floyd in a second-round match on Nov. 5.
