PSHS Iron Horse track teams gallop full steam ahead

If the recent Berkeley County Track and Field Championships are any indication, expect the Philip Simmons High School track and field teams to expand their empire to include the entire Palmetto State by the time the season concludes in May.
The Iron Horse girls were convincing with a 184.5-150.5 victory over Stratford High in a meet that was contested on March 26 at Cane Bay High School. Hanahan was third with 95 points.
Stratford edged the Iron Horses 169.5-164.5 to win the boys’ crown. However, the Iron Horses were golden, capturing the top position in eight of the 18 events contested. Cane Bay came in third with 138.5 points.
The Iron Horse girls dominated in the distance events and medaled in all three relay races to win convincingly.
Laura Perry won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 10.39 seconds, and Avah Mallek was third as the two combined for 16 points. The Iron Horses were impressive in the 3,200-meter run as Keziah Varner grabbed a gold medal in 12:07.63, while Anna Alomar was third for another 16 points.
Ashley Roush won the pole vault, clearing 3.33 meters, while Julia Reilly picked up silver medals in the long and triple jumps.
The Iron Horse 4x800-meter relay team captured first place, while Matea Payer was third in the 800-meter run as the Iron Horses placed four runners in the top six spots in the event to score 18 points in the event.
The Iron Horse girls were second in the 4x100-meter relay and third in the 4x400-meter relay in addition to winning gold in the 3200-meter relay to finish with 24 points in the relays.
Ashlynn Johnson and Illyana Pannell captured bronze medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Lilah May placed second in the high jump, and Chloe Woods earned a bronze medal in the javelin.
In the boys’ meet, Iron Horse sprinter Corey Steed was the star of the show, capturing gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with respective times of 10.54 and 21.64. He also was the anchor of the winning 4x100-meter relay team, which clocked in at 42.43.
Joseph Wright won the 800-meter run in 2:02.31 and was second in the 1,600-meter run to teammate Pierce Walker, who recorded a time of 4:25.73.
Brian Stambaugh claimed gold in the 3,200-meter run in 10:04.60. The other golden performances included Matthew Yaun in the javelin and the 4x800-meter relay team.
