A snowy morning that wasn’t meant for fishing

On Saturday morning, Elliott and I closed out the duck season. We did not see any ducks, but we did stumble upon a large school of redfish in very shallow water.

I lamented that we are awful duck hunters. Elliott observed that at least we can catch fish. We agreed to come back on Sunday to catch and release a few. It was our hope to take a redfish release photo with snow in the background.

With the bomb cyclone approaching with very strong winds, Elliott and I decided to move the skiff from the floating dock to the trailer. It is easier to clear snow and ice from the skiff while it is on dry land. Sunday morning, my backyard was covered in snow. The air temperature was 25 degrees, and the wind chill was in the teens. It was sunny but bitterly cold. Thankfully, the snow was dry, and I was able to use a leaf blower to clear most of it out of the skiff.

When Elliott arrived at my house, we asked Brody (the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog) if he wanted to go fishing. Brody excitedly ran out the back door and down the dock. He was about halfway to the floating dock when he stopped and realized the skiff was not there. For a minute or so, Brody just stood there confused. I laughed and took a picture.

Eventually, Brody figured out that the skiff was on the trailer in the driveway. We loaded up and drove to the community boat landing. Upon arrival, the security gate was inoperable. No fishing for us!

Elliott figured it was for the best because it was really cold. I could not disagree. Brody began to howl in disbelief. He calmed down after we promised to go to breakfast at Waffle House. Brody loves waffles. No fishing. No redfish release photo with snow in the background. Brody ate his waffle so fast, I did not get a picture.

So, here is a picture of Brody looking for the skiff on the floating dock.

Thanks to all who have expressed interest in the community fishing class. I plan to hold the class in March. More details to follow. If you would like to attend, please send me an email at captgregp@gmail.com
