A wonderful DI Chanukah celebration
The fifth annual Daniel Island public celebration of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah was held at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Saturday, December 24. According to Fred Danziger, event organizer: “Our celebration was a joyful and amazing success. The weather was fantastic and the people just kept coming. It was the best attended event in all five years.”
Approximately 150 people of all faiths took part in the celebration, which provided education and awareness about Chanukah. Traditional potato latkes were served accompanied by sour cream and applesauce, plus bite sized fried jelly doughnuts commemorating the miracle associated with the Temple oil. The many children who attended enjoyed the Chanukah music and danced the Hora.
Rabbi Greg Kanter of Temple Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim officiated. After a fun introduction to the festivities, during which he bantered with the children present about the story of Chanukah, he performed the blessings as the first candle was lit in the large menorah that stands at the entrance to the Family Circle Tennis Center.
While most of the attendees were from Daniel Island, the celebration drew people from Isle of Palms, Mt. Pleasant, downtown Charleston, and Summerville. The event ended just after sundown as happy adults and children headed home to light their own Chanukah candles or begin the festivities of Christmas Eve.
